Burren Trip
RECENTLY twenty five fourth year students from Kilkenny College went on a Potholing trip to the Burren Outdoor Education Centre in Co. Clare. Up first was the rock climbing, which both student and teachers excelled at, followed by Kayaking in a small river near the centre and caving on the last day.
The caving was the main attraction of the trip, with the students going through the main passage of the caves, which had numerous smaller passages that were deemed too dangerous for the novice cavers. “Even though we went through the main passage, we still had to do a lot of crawling for it” says Michael Hennessy who is one of the students, “At one point, we had to turn the lights out and guide ourselves by feeling the walls of the cave, you also had to get directions from the person in front of you”. The students had to wear equipment supplied by the centre, the equipment consisted of a helmet with a head torch, a plastic jumpsuit which was worn over the students own clothes due to the coldness of the caves.
